Archie: Terms of Use

These terms cover the Archie iPhone app and the website at thearchieapp.com (together, “Archie”), operated by Jason Girouard (“we”). By using Archie you agree to them. The Privacy Policy explains what Archie does with your data.

What Archie is

Archie identifies architectural styles and buildings from photos, and writes about them from its own catalog and from published sources such as Wikipedia. It is a learning tool. Identifications and histories are produced by software and can be wrong; don’t rely on them for anything that matters, such as property, legal or safety decisions.

Your account

You don’t need an account to identify a building in the iPhone app. You need one to save photos, keep a LifeList, collect places on the map, and use the website. Keep access to the email address or the Apple or Google account you sign in with: it is how you prove the account is yours. You can delete your account at any time from Settings in the app or from the account page on the website.

Your photos

Your photos stay yours. You give us permission to process each photo you send to identify it, and to store the photos you save so we can show them back to you on your devices. We don’t use your photos for anything else, and we don’t sell them. Only send photos you have the right to use, and nothing unlawful.

Fair use

Don’t misuse Archie: no automated scraping, no attempts to get around the free limit or the paywall, no interfering with the service or other people’s accounts, and no reselling access. We may suspend an account that does.

Archie Unlimited

Archie Unlimited removes the limit on identifications, opens every place on the map and answers your own questions about a building.

Bought in the iPhone app. The purchase is made through Apple and governed by Apple’s terms, including its refund process. Apple manages renewals and cancellations: on your iPhone, open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions.

Bought on the website. Payment is processed by Stripe.

• The yearly plan renews every year at the price shown when you subscribed until you cancel. If it starts with a free trial, you won’t be charged if you cancel before the trial ends; otherwise the first charge happens when the trial ends.
• Cancel at any time from the account page on the website. Cancelling stops the next renewal; you keep Archie Unlimited until the end of the period you paid for.
• The lifetime plan is a single payment with no renewal.
• If something went wrong with a charge, write to us from the support page within 30 days and we’ll make it right, including a refund where appropriate.

Archie Unlimited works on the iPhone and the website when you’re signed in to the same account, wherever you bought it. Prices can change; a change applies to a subscription only from its next renewal, after notice.

Content in Archie

Archie’s catalog, text and design belong to us. Photos in the field guide and on the map come from Wikimedia Commons and similar sources under their own licenses, credited where they appear. Histories of named buildings quote and summarize published sources, linked on each page.

Changes and ending

We may change Archie or these terms. If a change to these terms matters, we’ll say so in the app or on the website before it takes effect. You can stop using Archie at any time.

The legal part

Archie is provided as it is, without warranties beyond those the law requires. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential losses, and our total liability for any claim is limited to what you paid us for Archie in the twelve months before it.
