The H. Langford Warren House at 6 Garden Terrace in Cambridge was designed in 1904 by and for Herbert Langford Warren, the organizer and first department head of Harvard University's architecture program. Warren was also a leading figure in Boston's Arts and Crafts movement and one of the 24 founding members of the Society of Arts and Crafts in June 1897.

the building

Renaissance Revival entry hood. The entrance is sheltered by a Renaissance Revival hood carried on columns and flanked by sidelight windows, a formal note on an otherwise plain stuccoed three-story house.

Grouped stairwell windows. Most windows match in size, but the number of lights in each varies, and windows are grouped in places such as the stairwell above the main entrance to bring in extra light.

the architect

Herbert Langford Warren (1857-1917) organized and led Harvard University's first architecture department and helped found Boston's Society of Arts and Crafts in 1897; this house, built for his own use in 1904, is both his residence and his design.

significance

The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986, listed under the name Langford H. Warren House.
