19 South LaSalle Street was built in 1893 as the Central YMCA Association Building, designed by William Le Baron Jenney and William Bryce Mundie as the firm Jenney & Mundie, completed just before the Panic of 1893. It later housed Central YMCA College starting in 1961 and now operates as a mixed-use retail and office building.

the building

An uncompromising facade. The facade has been described as one of Jenney's most uncompromising: a strict rectangular grid interrupted only by horizontal banding at the 11th and 12th stories.

the style

Chicago School (c. 1880–1910): The first skyscrapers: steel frames shown as honest grids, huge three-part windows, ornament saved for base and top.
