Harry Weese designed the 227 East Walton Place Apartment Building in 1956, two blocks east of the Magnificent Mile and one block west of Lake Shore Drive in Streeterville. At a moment when Mies van der Rohe's International Style dominated Chicago high-rises, Weese instead used the city's humble red brick and stacked projecting window bays drawn from nineteenth-century Chicago School buildings.
the building
Projecting window bays. The stacked, projecting bay windows are drawn directly from late-nineteenth-century Chicago School buildings, a deliberate nod to the city's architectural past rather than the glass-and-steel modernism most of Weese's contemporaries were pursuing.
the style
Weese's design reflects his interest in a more humane modern architecture: rather than following Mies van der Rohe's International Style, he used red brick and historically derived bay windows to root the building in Chicago's own architectural vernacular.
More on Chicago Schoolthe architect
Harry Weese was a Chicago architect who here broke with the International Style dominant among his 1950s peers, choosing instead to draw on the city's older Chicago School vernacular.
significance
The building carries Chicago Landmark designation (L-311).
