The Jewelers Building at 15-17 S. Wabash Avenue was built in 1881-82 and designed by Dankmar Adler and Louis Sullivan — the only surviving example of Adler & Sullivan's early work in the Loop. Also known as the Iwan Ries Building, it's called the 'Little' Jewelers Building to distinguish it from the larger 1925-27 Jewelers Building at 35 E. Wacker Drive.
the building
An open, cast-iron facade. Though built as an ordinary loft building in construction and plan, the facade breaks from that type: cast-iron mullions replace masonry piers in the central bay, and Sullivan's stylized floral ornament gives it its distinction.
the architect
Dankmar Adler and Louis Sullivan designed this building early in their Chicago partnership; it is the only one of their early Loop works still standing.
significance
The Jewelers Building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on August 7, 1974, and designated a Chicago Landmark on December 18, 1981. It sits within Chicago's Jewelers Row District.
