KAM Isaiah Israel at 1100 East Hyde Park Boulevard is home to the oldest Jewish congregation in Chicago, founded November 3, 1847 as Kehilath Anshe Ma'arav by twenty men, many from Bavaria, above a dry-goods store at Lake and Wells streets. The congregation's current building, completed in 1924, was designed by Alfred S. Alschuler in the Byzantine Revival style.
the building
A domed Byzantine Revival facade. Alschuler gave the 1924 synagogue a prominent domed facade in the Byzantine Revival style, a departure from the congregation's earlier, more modest quarters above a Loop dry-goods store.
the style
The building is designed in the Byzantine Revival style, one of the more distinctive applications of that idiom to a Chicago synagogue.
More on Byzantinesignificance
The synagogue was designated Chicago Landmark L-124 on June 9, 1977.
