The Kaufmann Store and Flats went up on North Lincoln Avenue in two stages — the south half in 1883, the north half in 1887 — designed by Adler & Sullivan, the partnership that would go on to define Chicago's commercial architecture. The building combined ground-floor retail space with residential flats above, a common formula for the era. It was designated a Chicago Landmark on April 16, 1996.
the style
Chicago School (c. 1880–1910): The first skyscrapers: steel frames shown as honest grids, huge three-part windows, ornament saved for base and top.
