This building at 4700 South Ashland Avenue was designed in 1915 by Alfred S. Alschuler in the Chicago School style for Goldblatt's, the discount department store chain founded in 1914 by Polish immigrant brothers Nate and Maurice Goldblatt. The chain grew from a single West Side grocery-turned-store into more than twenty locations before finally closing in 2000, and this building was designated a Chicago Landmark in 2013.
the style
The building is classed in the Chicago School idiom, the commercial style developed in the city for large multi-story retail and office buildings, suited here to a department store built to move shoppers and goods through open, well-lit floors.
More on Chicago Schoolsignificance
The building is an individually designated Chicago Landmark (L-320), designated May 8, 2013, and is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
