Snell-Hitchcock pairs two of the University of Chicago's oldest residence halls — Snell Hall (1892) and Hitchcock Hall (1901) — at the northwest corner of the main quadrangles, 57th Street and Ellis Avenue. Architect Dwight H. Perkins gave Snell a Collegiate Gothic face and Hitchcock a Prairie-influenced Gothic one, and together they remain the oldest dormitories still in use on campus.
the building
Snitchcock spirit. Known colloquially as Snitchcock, the dorm is famous for community spirit centered on the annual University of Chicago Scavenger Hunt, which its team has won 14 of 29 times as of 2015, including the longest winning streak in the game's history. Hitchcock's mascot is the armadillo; Snell's is the tortoise.
Materials and details. Both halls feature fireplaces, limestone exteriors, and hardwood molding and trim, and are connected via emergency exits to the neighboring Searle Chemistry Laboratory.
the style
Snell was built in a Collegiate Gothic style in 1892; Hitchcock followed in 1901 in a Prairie Style-inspired Gothic, marking a shift in campus architecture in the nine years between them.
More on Prairie Schoolsignificance
