The Sofitel Chicago Magnificent Mile, originally named Sofitel Chicago Water Tower, opened in May 2002 in the Gold Coast, designed by French architect Jean-Paul Viguier. Its 415 rooms and French-style architecture drew attention from the start, and the American Institute of Architects later placed it on its America's Favorite Architecture list.
the building
The knife's edge. Viguier's angular, prism-shaped tower comes to a knifelike edge at its southern end, which cantilevers 33 feet out over the sidewalk below.
the style
The tower reads as French-style architecture, a design language noted from its 2002 opening and distinct from the historic revival styles common elsewhere along Michigan Avenue.
