St. James Cathedral at Huron Street and Wabash Avenue is the mother church of the Episcopal Diocese of Chicago and the oldest Anglican or Episcopal congregation in the Chicago area, founded in 1834. Abraham Lincoln and Mary Todd Lincoln attended a service here on November 25, 1860, weeks after his election, alongside Vice President-elect Hannibal Hamlin and a crowd of Chicago dignitaries.
the building
The surviving bell tower. The original St. James building was largely destroyed in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Only its bell tower survived, and it was incorporated into the rebuilt 1875 church -- the stones around its top are still stained black with soot from the fire today.
the style
The 1875 rebuilding was carried out in the Gothic Revival style.
