Saint Mary of the Angels in Bucktown was designed by the firm of Worthmann and Steinbach, who modeled it directly on St. Peter's Basilica in Rome - the same template the firm used for sister churches like St. Josaphat's Basilica in Milwaukee and Immaculate Heart of Mary in Pittsburgh. Built as a Polish Cathedral-style parish church, it has been acclaimed as one of the finest examples of Roman Renaissance architecture in the United States, and its twin bell towers and dome remain visible from the Kennedy Expressway.

the building

Twin towers and dome. The brick edifice carries twin bell towers and a dome scaled to recall St. Peter's Basilica, the model Worthmann and Steinbach used for a handful of monumental Polish parish churches around the Midwest.

the style

Worthmann and Steinbach worked in the Renaissance Revival vocabulary of St. Peter's Basilica itself, part of the broader "Polish Cathedral style" movement that gave immigrant parishes church buildings of Roman scale and grandeur.
