Westminster is a three-story brick apartment building at 632–640 Hinman Avenue in Evanston, built in 1912 with a U-shaped plan wrapped around a wide central courtyard. Architect John A. Nyden, an Evanston resident who designed several other apartment buildings in the city, worked in the Prairie School idiom for this project.
the building
Courtyard plan. The U-shaped building wraps a wide central courtyard, a layout Nyden used to bring light and air into a multi-unit apartment building.
Prairie detailing. Limestone banding, arched entrances, wood window mullions, and a hipped roof with a bracketed cornice give the brick building its Prairie School texture.
the style
The Prairie School emphasized horizontal lines and natural materials; here it shows up in the limestone banding and low, bracketed roofline rather than in a dramatic massing statement.
