This Bob's Big Boy was designed in 1949 by Wayne McAllister, the architect credited with pioneering the mid-century drive-in restaurant typology. It is a surviving outpost of the chain Bob Wian started in 1936 as Bob's Pantry, home of the original double-decker hamburger, made by slicing a bun into three layers around two patties.
the style
The building follows the Googie-era coffee shop and drive-in style that Wayne McAllister helped pioneer, designed to catch the eye of passing drivers rather than pedestrians.
