Carved into a natural bowl-shaped hollow in the Hollywood Hills — originally called Daisy Dell and sited in 1919 — the Hollywood Bowl opened in 1922 as an outdoor amphitheatre. Owned by the County of Los Angeles, it is the summer home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the year-round home of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, hosting hundreds of events each year.

the building

The shell. The Bowl's signature feature is its bandshell: a set of concentric arches stood from 1929 through 2003, when it was replaced with a larger shell for the 2004 season, framed against the Hollywood Hills and the Hollywood Sign to the northeast.

the style

The Bowl's shell has been linked to Neues Bauen, the German New Building movement — an unusual style reference for an American concert venue and one that underscores how distinctive its concentric-arch form was for its time.

significance

Rolling Stone named the Hollywood Bowl one of the ten best live music venues in the United States in 2018, and it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2023.
