Lanterman House is a 1915 Craftsman bungalow in La Cañada Flintridge commissioned by Dr. Roy Lanterman and built by A. L. Haley. Having treated victims of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire, Lanterman insisted the foundation, floors, and walls be poured in reinforced concrete, and Haley translated the wood-bungalow vocabulary of the Craftsman style into that material.

the building

Ballroom and consulting rooms. The entire second floor is given over to a grand ballroom, while Dr. Lanterman's medical consulting rooms occupied the basement. Both survive today with much of the house's original furniture and finishes intact.

the style

Haley built in the American Craftsman bungalow idiom but in reinforced concrete rather than the wood typical of the style, a substitution driven by Lanterman's earthquake concerns rather than aesthetics.
