USC's Physical Education building, completed in 1930 by the Parkinsons in the Romanesque Revival style, is the university's oldest on-campus athletic building. It houses the 1,000-seat North Gym and was home to USC's first indoor swimming facility.

the building

The North Gym. The 1,000-seat North Gym served as home court for USC's men's and women's volleyball teams from 1970 to 1988, then shared duty with the Lyon Center until 2006, before both the basketball and volleyball programs moved to the Galen Center in 2007.

Beyond athletics. The building also houses USC's Air Force, Army, and Navy ROTC programs, and its gym has served as a filming location for movies including Love & Basketball and Swimfan.

the style

The Parkinsons designed the building in the Romanesque Revival style in 1930, giving USC's oldest athletic facility its masonry solidity and round-arched detailing.
