Gates of Heaven Synagogue was built in 1863 on the isthmus to a design by architect August Kutzbock, again in the Rundbogenstil, or round-arch, style he used for the Carrie Pierce House. It is a Madison Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Wisconsin State Register of Historic Places.

the building

Round-arch massing. The synagogue's Rundbogenstil design gives it round-arch massing and ornament visible on the facade, a style Kutzbock also used on the Carrie Pierce House six years earlier.

the style

Gates of Heaven Synagogue shares its Rundbogenstil, or round-arch, style with Kutzbock's Carrie Pierce House, making it part of a small, distinctive body of round-arch work by the same architect in Madison.
