The Sans Souci Hotel opened in Mid-Beach in 1949, one of Morris Lapidus's early Miami Beach hotel commissions and among the buildings that helped define what would become known as Miami Modern architecture. Lapidus was still years from designing the Fontainebleau when he took this job, and the Sans Souci is where the MiMo vocabulary he later made famous first started to take shape.

the style

The Sans Souci belongs to the Miami Modern, or MiMo, style — a postwar idiom of sweeping curves and theatrical resort forms that Lapidus helped invent, and this hotel is counted among the early commissions where he worked it out.
