The Church of the Resurrection, completed in 1869 to a design by James Renwick Jr., is the oldest church structure on the Upper East Side. It was founded in 1868 as the Church of the Holy Sepulchre by a group of Episcopalians, with the chaplain of a nearby militia armory serving as its first rector.
the building
Unfinished designs. Due to problems and a lack of funds, Renwick's original designs were never fully executed; the Great Rood inside dates only to 1940, decades after the building itself was finished.
the style
Built in the Gothic Revival style, the church reflects its Anglo-Catholic, Anglo-Papalist character, with traditional-language Masses and an extensive music program continuing in its Anglican and Western Catholic liturgical tradition.
