The Cunard Building at 25 Broadway is a 22-story office building completed in 1921 and designed by Benjamin Wistar Morris with consultants Carrère & Hastings in the Italian Renaissance style. It rose across from Bowling Green Park to house the Cunard steamship line's offices, and its ground floor became one of Lower Manhattan's grandest public interiors.

The Great Hall. The first floor holds an elaborately decorated lobby and a Great Hall that extends 185 feet with a 65-foot-tall dome, built to impress transatlantic passengers booking their crossings.

Broadway facade. The limestone main facade is organized into three horizontal sections with setbacks and open light courts, following the 1916 Zoning Resolution, and the building was fitted around an irregular street grid above a diagonal subway line.

the style

Morris and Carrère & Hastings worked in the Italian Renaissance idiom, giving the shipping line's headquarters a civic, palazzo-like gravity suited to its role as a gateway for transatlantic travelers.
