The Stephen Van Rensselaer House at 149 Mulberry Street was built around 1816 in the Federal style by Stephen Van Rensselaer III. Originally standing at the northwest corner of Mulberry and Grand, it was moved down the block to its current site in 1841. The two-story dormered house is a typical example of the Federal-style row houses once common below 14th Street.
the style
The house follows the Federal row-house type widespread in Manhattan below 14th Street in the early nineteenth century: two stories with dormers, built as part of a once-common residential fabric that has largely disappeared.
More on Federalsignificance
The house was designated a New York City landmark in 1969 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.
