The Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace National Historic Site at 28 East 20th Street is a recreated brownstone replicating the birthplace and childhood home of the 26th president, who was born there on October 27, 1858, and lived there until 1872. The original 1848 house, bought by the Roosevelts in 1854, was demolished in 1916 for retail space; after Roosevelt's 1919 death, the Women's Roosevelt Memorial Association purchased the lot and rebuilt the house as a replica, with architect Theodate Pope Riddle also designing the adjoining museum.

the building

Reconstructed rowhouse facade. The building visible today is a 1920s replica of the demolished 1848 original, rebuilt on the same site at 28 East 20th Street after the Women's Roosevelt Memorial Association acquired the lot.

the architect

Theodate Pope Riddle, a noted female American architect, designed the replica house's reconstruction along with the adjoining museum building.

significance

Designated a New York City Individual Landmark (LP-00218) on 3/15/1966 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the site is administered as the Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace National Historic Site by the Theodore Roosevelt Association, formed in 1953 from the merger of the Women's Roosevelt Memorial Association and the Roosevelt Memorial Association.
