Built around 1870 as a two-story Italianate brick rowhouse, this Southwest Center City house was purchased in 1924 by contralto Marian Anderson, the same year she became the first African-American concert artist to record spirituals for a major American recording company. Anderson, born in the same neighborhood 27 years after the house went up, lived here until 1943.

The added studio. Around 1925 Anderson had a studio built above what had been a one-story rear kitchen ell, and the house underwent a further extensive renovation around 1940.
the style
Cataloged as Italianate, expressed here simply as a two-story brick rowhouse dwelling rather than through elaborate ornament.
