The New Century Club clubhouse in Center City was designed by Minerva Parker Nichols, one of the first women in the United States to practice architecture independently. The club itself, founded in January 1877, grew out of the Women's Pavilion at that year's Centennial Exposition and became one of the first women's clubs in the country, bringing together professional women and activists in women's rights and abolition.
