The Bell Miller Apartments, a six-flat building at 835 South Second Street, were built in 1909 by Bell Miller, a local florist branching into real estate, to a Classical Revival design by architect George H. Helmle.
the building
Classical detail inside and out. An entrance pavilion supported by Doric columns, verandahs on both sides, and an egg-and-dart frieze with dentillated cornice mark the exterior, while stairways with Classical balustrades lead to each apartment inside.
the style
Part of a wave of new apartment buildings in Springfield's Aristocracy Hill neighborhood in the 1910s and 1920s marketed as "luxury apartments," the Bell Miller stood apart for its Classical decoration carried through to the interior, not just a formal exterior.
