The F Street House is a Greek Revival mansion built in 1849 for U.S. Navy Captain Alexander Ray, just blocks from the White House. It has cycled through several identities since — American University's 'Downtown Campus' starting in 1920, the private F Street Club from 1935, and today the official residence of the President of George Washington University.
the building
The F Street Club. Purchased in 1935 by the 1925 F Street Club, Inc. and started by Laura M. Gross, the building operated for decades as a private members' club whose guests included Presidents Harry Truman, John F. Kennedy, and George H. W. Bush along with members of their administrations — a popularity owed partly to being only a few blocks from the White House.
the style
Built in the Greek Revival style in 1849, a fashion favored for prominent Washington residences of the era.
