The Lafayette is one of the earliest apartment buildings built in Washington, D.C., completed in 1898 to designs by architect George S. Cooper. Standing in the Shaw neighborhood at 1605-1607 7th St NW, it applied Queen Anne detailing to an affordable, middle-class housing development rather than a fashionable one. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.
the style
The building incorporates elements of the Queen Anne style, a decorative Victorian idiom more often associated with single-family houses, applied here to one of the city's first purpose-built apartment blocks.
