The Codman Building at 55 Kilby Street (also addressed as 10 Liberty Square) began as a four-story brick and stone commercial building designed by Sturgis & Brigham and built in 1874 in the Gothic Revival style. It is the only surviving commercial design by the firm in Boston's Financial District. Three more floors were added sometime before 1898, in the more typical Late Victorian manner of the day, giving the building its current six-story profile.

the building

Two campaigns, two styles. The lower four floors carry Sturgis & Brigham's original 1874 Gothic Revival design, while the upper three floors, added before 1898, read in a plainer Late Victorian idiom - a visible seam between two building campaigns a generation apart.

the style

The original 1874 design was executed in the Gothic Revival style; the later addition, built in a more typical Late Victorian fashion, gives the upper floors a different, plainer character than the ornamented Gothic base below.
