The East Cambridge Savings Bank's Art Deco headquarters at 292 Cambridge Street in East Cambridge, Massachusetts was built in 1931 to a design by T. M. James for a mutual savings bank founded in 1854 that serves communities north and west of Boston. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.
the building
Triple-arched facade. The front facade is dominated by a triple-arched composition, an element echoed on the side elevation by three similarly scaled round-arch windows, giving the bank a monumental, templelike entrance sequence.
Carved bands and interior art. Carved bands wrap an entablature at the top of the main wall and a stepped-back section above it, while the interior holds sculpture by Paul Fjelde and murals painted by Alfred Rasmussen.
the style
The building's Art Deco design channels the era's taste for stepped massing and carved ornamental bands into the reassuring, arched formality expected of a bank headquarters.
