The Berwyn Health Center at 6600 W. 26th Street was built in 1938-39 by architect Vladimir J. Novak, a Berwyn resident, giving the city's health department expanded space for healthcare, vaccination efforts, food inspection, and Depression-era relief work. It was one of three buildings the city built with Public Works Administration funds over three years, alongside its municipal building and post office.
the building
Art Deco meets Moderne. The building combines the two styles common to PWA construction: Art Deco geometric massing paired with Moderne horizontal banding.
the style
Novak blended Art Deco and Moderne, styles frequently paired in Public Works Administration buildings of the era; here the Art Deco shows in the geometric massing, the Moderne in the horizontal banding.
More on Art Decosignificance
Added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 21, 2002. The building remains in use as a health clinic and government office.
