The Bryan Lathrop House is a Georgian style residence at 120 E Bellevue Place in the Gold Coast, built in 1892 by the New York firm McKim, Mead & White for Bryan Lathrop. In 1922 the house was sold to the Fortnightly Club, which still occupies it today. It was designated a Chicago Landmark in 1973 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.

the building

The Fortnightly Club. The house passed from Bryan Lathrop's ownership to the Fortnightly Club in 1922, and the club has occupied the building ever since, giving the mansion a century-long second life as a private clubhouse rather than a single-family home.

the style

The house is built in the Georgian style, drawing on the symmetrical, classically detailed vocabulary of 18th-century English domestic architecture rather than the more eclectic Gilded Age modes common elsewhere in the Gold Coast.

the architect

McKim, Mead & White was a nationally significant American architecture firm; the Bryan Lathrop House is one of the relatively few Chicago commissions carrying the firm's name.

significance

Designated a Chicago Landmark on May 9, 1973, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
