The Edgewater Beach Hotel was a lakefront resort complex in the Edgewater neighborhood, designed by Benjamin H. Marshall and Charles E. Fox. The first hotel tower went up in 1916 in a Spanish Revival style for owners John Tobin Connery and James Patrick Connery, and a south tower followed in 1924, joined to the original by a low connecting building. The resort's beaches, pools, clubs, and gardens drew movie and sports stars, and later Martin Luther King Jr., before the hotel closed in 1967 and was demolished.

the building

Sunrise yellow and sunset pink. The hotel buildings were painted 'sunrise yellow,' complemented by the 'sunset pink' Edgewater Beach Apartments built just north in 1928 as part of the same resort complex — the apartments survive and are separately listed on the National Register.

the style

The original 1916 hotel tower was built in the Spanish Revival style; the 1924 addition and connecting building carried the same architectural language across the expanded complex.

the architect

Benjamin H. Marshall and Charles E. Fox, partners in the firm Marshall and Fox, designed the hotel complex.

significance

The hotel itself was demolished soon after closing in 1967, but the related Edgewater Beach Apartments remain standing and are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
