The Edwin Colvin House at 5940 North Sheridan Road was built in 1909 in the Prairie style by George W. Maher for Edwin M. Colvin, a printing executive who rose to lead F.W. Hall Printing Company after moving to Chicago in 1885. The city designated it a Chicago Landmark on October 5, 1994.

the building

Echoes of Pleasant Home. Published in Architectural Record in February 1916, the Colvin House design echoes Maher's earlier Prairie houses, including Pleasant Home for John Farson and the A.B. Leach house. Its roof is topped in Ludowici clay tile.

the style

The house is executed in Maher's Prairie idiom, the same style he used for Pleasant Home a decade earlier, and the design was prominent enough to be published in Architectural Record in 1916.
