Holy Trinity Church at 1118 North Noble Street was founded in 1872 to relieve overcrowding at St. Stanislaus Kostka, Chicago's first Polish parish. A twenty-year rivalry between the two parishes followed, resolved only when the Vatican sent an Apostolic Delegate to intervene, and the Congregation of Holy Cross, led by Casimir Sztuczko, took over the new parish.
the building
Bell from the first church. A bell from the original Holy Trinity building still stands behind the current church, a holdover from the parish's first home before this grander structure replaced it.
the style
Holy Trinity is a prime example of the Polish cathedral style, built with the opulence and grand scale that Polish immigrant parishes used to assert a permanent presence in the city, standing alongside St. Mary of the Angels, St. Hedwig's, and St. John Cantius above the Kennedy Expressway in Pulaski Park.
significance
The parish was long tied to the Polish National Alliance, whose most active members were parishioners here, and since 1987 the church has served as home to the Holy Trinity Polish Mission.
