The McCormick Tribune Campus Center opened September 30, 2003, on the Illinois Institute of Technology campus in Bronzeville — the first American building by Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas. The single-story, 110,000-square-foot building won a 1997 international design competition whose finalists included Peter Eisenman, Helmut Jahn, Zaha Hadid, and Kazuyo Sejima, with Koolhaas partnering with Chicago firm Holabird & Root on structural engineering.

Movement-tracked pathways. Koolhaas tracked how students actually crossed the site — previously a parking lot with Green Line tracks running overhead — and turned those paths into the diagonal interior thoroughfares that organize the building, relocating scattered campus functions like the bookstore and post office along them.

International design competition. IIT ran an international competition beginning in 1997; finalists included Peter Eisenman, Helmut Jahn, Zaha Hadid, and Kazuyo Sejima before Koolhaas was chosen as winner, working with Chicago firm Holabird & Root on structural engineering.
