The Strand Hotel opened in 1915 at 6315-6323 S. Cottage Grove Avenue, an apartment hotel offering both transient guest rooms and long-term apartment-style residences for tenants who wanted hotel-grade amenities. Architects Davis & Davis (Charles G. Davis and Zachary Taylor Davis) designed the Classical Revival building for what was then a major Woodlawn commercial strip. It's now one of the district's few surviving buildings and the only apartment hotel left standing in the neighborhood.

the building

Terra cotta trim. The red brick exterior is grounded by a first floor clad entirely in terra cotta, with the building's piers outlined in the same material and an entablature and cornice running along the roofline.

Restaurant and banquet hall. The hotel included a restaurant and a banquet hall; the banquet hall had a second life as a live music venue for many years.

the style

The Classical Revival design gave a modest apartment hotel the dressed-up, orderly street presence of downtown commercial buildings, with terra cotta detailing standing in for stone at a fraction of the cost.
