The Hubbell Building is a ten-story, steel-framed structure rising 151 feet, designed by the Des Moines firm Proudfoot, Bird & Rawson and completed in 1913 for F. M. Hubbell, Son, & Company, a real estate firm founded in 1887. The company housed its corporate headquarters here while renting out most of the remaining space to other firms.
the building
Lost ornament. The building originally had a more ornate cornice, but part of it fell onto the sidewalk in the late 1940s, prompting its removal in 1948 and replacement with smooth concrete panels designed by the Des Moines firm Brooks Borg, which also simplified the storefront level in 1950.
the style
The Hubbell Building was built in the Chicago School idiom, its steel frame clad in brick rising ten stories and 151 feet above the street.
