The Friday Morning Club building is a six-story Italian Renaissance Revival clubhouse built in 1923 by architects Allison & Allison, serving for 61 years as the second home of the Friday Morning Club, a women's civic organization founded by Caroline Severance in 1891.

the building

Largest women's club in California. Founded with 87 members in the reading room of the Hollenbeck Hotel, the Friday Morning Club grew into California's largest women's club, with membership topping 1,800 by the 1920s, large enough to warrant this purpose-built clubhouse.

the style

Allison & Allison's Italian Renaissance Revival design gave the club an elaborate, classically ordered clubhouse suited to an organization that had become a major civic institution in Los Angeles.

significance

Caroline Severance, the club's founder, had also founded one of the first women's clubs in the nation, the New England Women's Club of Boston, in 1868, and her political associations gave the Friday Morning Club a reputation for civic activism. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
