Paul R. Williams, the architect known as "architect to the stars" for his work across Los Angeles's most exclusive neighborhoods, designed and built this International Style house for himself in 1952 at 1690 Victoria Avenue. As an African American architect barred from many of the neighborhoods he designed for, Williams built his own 4,440-square-foot, four-bedroom home in Lafayette Square, a Mid-City neighborhood free of racial restrictions.
the style
Williams worked in the International Style for his own house even as he moved fluently between period revival styles for wealthy clients, a choice that reflects his personal taste rather than any single client's brief.
