The Pellissier Building and Wiltern Theatre is a 12-story, 155-foot Art Deco tower at Wilshire Boulevard and Western Avenue, named for the family that owned the land it was built on. Completed in 1931 and clad in blue-green glazed terra-cotta tile, the complex — set diagonally across its corner — is considered one of the finest examples of Art Deco architecture in the United States. The Wiltern Theatre portion is now operated by Live Nation.
the building
Set on the diagonal. Rather than squaring off with the street grid, the steel-reinforced concrete tower sits diagonally across the Wilshire and Western corner, rising from a two-story pedestal that holds ground-floor retail and the theater entrance.
the style
The building's blue-green glazed terra-cotta cladding and narrow vertical windows are hallmarks of Art Deco design, and the complex is regularly cited as one of the style's finest surviving examples in the country.
More on Art Decosignificance
The complex is designated a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
