St. Basil Catholic Church, a Brutalist parish church of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles at 3611 Wilshire Boulevard, was built from 1967 to 1969 and dedicated that year, designed by Albert C. Martin, Sr. The parish itself traces to 1919, when Bishop John Cantwell created it to serve the city's growth westward along Wilshire Boulevard.
the building
Protests over its construction. In 1969 and 1970, Chicano Movement protesters picketed and demonstrated against the new church, objecting to the archdiocese spending substantial funds on its construction rather than on the poor and social justice programs.
the style
St. Basil's Brutalist design gives the church its prominent poured-concrete massing, a stark departure from the parish's earlier buildings and part of Albert C. Martin, Sr.'s work for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.
