The Samuel Merrill House is a 1910 Craftsman residence at 1285 N. Summit Avenue in Pasadena, designed by Charles and Henry Greene for conservationist Samuel Merrill. It's regarded as one of the best-preserved small houses Greene & Greene ever built.
the building
Materials and roofline. The single-story, L-shaped house is built of redwood and Arroyo stone with clinker brick decoration, under a gable roof with overhanging eaves and exposed rafter tails, and banded casement windows across the facade.
the style
The house is a modest expression of the American Craftsman style, built from natural materials with the exposed structure and deep eaves the Greenes made a signature of their work.
the architect
Charles and Henry Greene were Pasadena's noted Craftsman architects; the Merrill House is one of their smaller residential commissions, prized today for how intact its original details remain.
significance
The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 5, 2001.
