The 34 Dominick Street House is one of three Federal style row houses built around 1826 by Smith Bloomfield on Dominick Street in Hudson Square. Originally twelve such houses lined the block; most were demolished over time, including several cleared for entrances to the Holland Tunnel. All three surviving houses were designated New York City Landmarks on March 27, 2012.
the building
An altered Federal house. Around 1866, 34 and 36 Dominick Street each gained an added story with an Italianate cornice, a common update for Federal-era row houses of the period. All three houses were built in Flemish bond brick.
the style
The original houses were built in the Federal style typical of 1820s New York row housing, brick construction laid in Flemish bond, though later Italianate alterations layered a different cornice onto the upper story.
