The Church of Saint Mary at 440 Grand Street dates to 1833 and was later enlarged with a new facade designed by the prolific church architect Patrick Charles Keely. It is the second-oldest Catholic structure in the city after St. Patrick's Old Cathedral, and the parish itself, established in 1826 to serve Irish immigrants, is the third oldest Catholic parish in New York.

significance

The church is an NYC Individual Landmark (LP-02694), designated 4/7/2026. In 1831, anti-Catholic nativists set fire to the church, though it survived and continued to operate; the arson helped spur the founding of the first New York chapter of the Ancient Order of Hibernians in 1836.
