The Plaza Hotel is a luxury hotel and condominium building at 768 Fifth Avenue, on the western side of Grand Army Plaza at the southeastern corner of Central Park. Completed in 1907, it was designed by Henry Janeway Hardenbergh in a French Renaissance-inspired château style. At 18 stories and, at its peak, more than 800 rooms, it became one of Manhattan's defining luxury hotels. Since 2018 it has been owned by the Qatari firm Katara Hospitality.

the building

Facade and roofline. The building's base is clad in marble, with white brick covering the upper stories, all capped by a mansard roof — the château vocabulary that gives the Plaza its silhouette on the park.

Ground-floor rooms. The ground floor holds two primary lobbies linked by a corridor to the hotel's landmark public rooms, including the Oak Room, the Oak Bar, the Edwardian Room, the Palm Court, and the Terrace Room. The upper floors hold a ballroom along with residential condominiums, condo-hotel suites, and short-term hotel suites.

the style

Hardenbergh designed the Plaza in a French Renaissance-inspired château style, using a marble base, white brick upper stories, and a mansard roof to evoke the grand residential architecture of Renaissance France, translated to the scale of a modern luxury hotel.
