The University Club of New York is a private social club at 1 West 54th Street and Fifth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, chartered in 1865 for the promotion of literature and art. Its current clubhouse, a nine-story granite-faced structure in the Renaissance Revival and Mediterranean Revival styles, was designed by McKim, Mead & White and completed in 1899. It is considered one of the most prestigious clubs in New York City.

the building

A long search for a home. The club struggled with financing after its 1865 charter, going without a permanent clubhouse from 1868 to 1879. After reorganizing in 1879, it was housed at John Caswell's residence and then the Jerome Mansion before its current granite-faced clubhouse was completed in 1899.

the style

McKim, Mead & White designed the clubhouse in the Renaissance Revival and Mediterranean Revival styles, clad in granite, giving the club a facade of civic grandeur befitting its status among Manhattan's private clubs.
