The University Settlement Society, at 184 Eldridge Street on the Lower East Side, was founded in 1886 by Stanton Coit, Charles Bunstein Stover, and Charles Barzillai Spahr as the Neighborhood Guild — the first settlement house in the United States. Its Neoclassical building, designed by Howells & Stokes, became a hub for immigrant education and social services in the neighborhood.
