The W. R. Grace Building is a 50-floor, 630-foot skyscraper at 1114 Sixth Avenue in Midtown, with its main entrance on 42nd Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues, overlooking Bryant Park and the New York Public Library. Designed principally by Gordon Bunshaft and completed in 1972, it was commissioned by the W. R. Grace Company on the former site of Stern's department store's flagship store and headquarters.

the building

Concave sloped facades. The north and south facades slope inward with a concave curve, an aesthetic touch distinguishing the tower from the flat glass boxes of its era.

the style

Postmodernism (c. 1975–1995): Classical bits quoted at the wrong scale in bold colors: columns, pediments, and keystones with a wink.
