Completed in 1990 on the former site of Philadelphia's Greyhound bus terminal, this 54-story Kohn Pedersen Fox tower rises 792 feet as part of the Penn Center complex at 1735 Market Street. Known as Mellon Bank Center until a 2009 rebranding tied it to the newly formed Bank of New York Mellon, it was sold in early 2019 for $451.6 million — a record price for a Philadelphia property.
the building
The Pyramid Club. The 52nd floor houses the Pyramid Club, a private club occupying one of the building's uppermost floors, 792 feet above Market Street.
Underground connections. A shopping concourse beneath the tower links to an adjacent winter garden and to Suburban Station, threading the building into Philadelphia's underground pedestrian network as part of the broader Penn Center complex, also known as Nine Penn Center.
the style
Postmodernism (c. 1975–1995): Classical bits quoted at the wrong scale in bold colors: columns, pediments, and keystones with a wink.
